Valentine Dinner

Made a dinner for Valentine's day. This is an appetizer plate; smoked salmon rolls with cream cheese topped with orange and green onion, small salad with Parmesan cheese crisp, and shrimp and avocado cocktail with consommé gelée. I liked the consommé gelée which was made with chicken soup, a little bit of soy sauce and gelatin. I poured an egg white during the soup was cooking so that it sucked all the unwanted fat and scum and made the soup clear. The egg white was removed afterwards. The cheese crisp was good and easy to make...just shred some parmesano ressano, shape it round and bake them 325 degree oven for 8 minutes.

Oysters from a Farmer's market this morning are also part of the dinner. The sauce is shallot, red wine vinegar, tomato, black pepper and a dash of sugar. It was fresh and so tasty.

Now main dish, La recette du civet de sanglier (wild boar meat stewed in red wine) which took me three days to make. It was worth it because Steven loved it and so did I. The sauce was incredibly good. The veggies and meat gave it nice complicated and rich taste.

Dessert is chocolate fondue with heart shaped strawberries and ice cream. Valentine cannot be spent without chocolate.

La recette du civet de sanglier

I wanted to make this dish, wild boar stew in red wine ever since we had it in Paris last year. The reasons why it took me a long time are, one:I couldn't find wild boar meat anywhere and two: it takes three days to make. However I found a meat store that has wild boar meat and I can do this for a "special" Valentine dinner.

Dittmers Gourmet Meats (お肉屋さん)
400 San Antonio Rd
Mountain View, CA

Day 1: (一日目)
1.Found the meat!
2. Cut veggies and meat and marinate them in red wine with herbs. Keep it in the fridge for a night.
Day 2: (二日目)
4.Separate veggies and meat from the wine marinade.
3.Fry pancetta and put the veggies and fry them.

5.Roast the meat in the different pan to brown them.
6.Put the veggies and meat in the wine marinade and bring it to boil.
7.Put the casserole in the oven at 390F for 1.5 hours. 200
8. Oh, it's cooked but it is not ready yet. Take it from the oven and let it stand till it becomes room temperature and put it in the fridge overnight. Good night!

Day3 (3日目):The fat has risen up to the top so take it out with a small spoon and heat up on the stove slowly and cooked for another 40 minutes and done! I will show you the finishing picture tomorrow.

Hina dolls

I displayed my hina dolls for Hina festival. I am supposed to do this every year but I couldn't last year because I was in Rio. :) They have been nice and quiet in the box. I uncovered the dolls one by one and felt like I heard my mom say "Don't touch the dolls' faces!". That's what she said every time we did this in Japan. My fingers may dirt their pure white faces so I was careful this time, too, mom.

Princess:"Whew, now I can breath. What is Mikako thinking? We've been in the box for 2 years!" Sorry, princess.

Now everybody is out and happy. They are sunbathing. Princess:"I am sure sunbathing in Rio is much better than this!" Me: I said I was sorry!!

Girl A:"How have you been?" Girl B:"I've been OK. I was just missing the sun."
Girls, it was only 2 years and you have sleeping hair, girl A.

Here!

Girl C:"You haven't called me or emailed me for long time. Don't tell me you don't have Internet at home." BoyA:"I was busy...."

"One, two.....one, two, three, four..."♪♪

Now everybody is in the place. Good looking, guys!

Japanese food and Takoyaki

Japanese food day. We had Tuna&Natto, Grilled Hamachi kama(meat around color bone of Yellow tail )& grated daikon, pickled veggies, stewed burdock & carrot (no pic) and brown rice(no pic). I am so glad that my American husband likes daily Japanese food like Hamachi kama. It smells strong so many people don't like it. This one had a lot of fish fat so was juicy and tasty.

Another Japanese daily food, Takoyaki. I purchased this Takoyaki pan for only $3 from a Japanese lady who prefers electric one. I cut octopus and green onions, mixed flour and broth and poured it in the pan. "Oh, it looks and smells gooooood!" I thought.

But... でも…

They didn't get cooked! I was sitting by the pan for 20 minutes and the dumplings were still runny. I managed to flip them but the shape was terrible. Steven said "They are good!" but I knew he was being nice. I thought "Man, this $3 pan doesn't work. That's why that lady wanted to get rid of this!!" and I thought again "Maybe the heat was too weak?" I was standing and staring at the pan holding my flipping tool.
Then... すると…

The cup I mixed egg in came into my sight....."Oh, I forgot adding eggs!! "

After I added the egg, the takoyaki pan worked like a charm! Sorry, takoyaki pan and the lady who sold it to me! I blamed on you, guys but it was my fault. The takoyaki with egg were VERY good. I just wished that I could have had them before I have eaten a dozen of failures...

These are radish leaves I am drying in the kitchen. It will be a good ingredient for miso soup.

You can become like Obama!

This is an iconic poster that was used for the election. Designed by and very impressive poster.

Now you can be like him at this site. Upload pictures and adjust the balance of the three color. My picture came out good! Kibou=Hope.

Steven's is also nice with his secret nickname, Stee. :)

We try to eat healthy so one night, we had only roasted veggies-cauliflower, carrots, sweet potatoes, french potatoes and brussel sprouts. We love sweet potatoes a lot. They are sweet and tasty and also rich in Vitamin C!

Next day of the healthy dinner, we had "all you can eat hot pot and BBQ". We had hot broth and regular broth in a divided pot in the center. There is a grill part around the pot and you can BBQ on it. What a concept! It was a lot of fun to cook on the table.

Another stencil and pasta

I did another stencil on my old shirt. They are supposed to be coral but look like branches...I needed made them thicker, I guess. Well, I like plants patterns so it it ok like this, too!

We went to a Farmer's Market in Mountain View last Saturday and got fresh pasta with herbs. The great pasta we had at CHIAROSCURO possessed our minds and we were need-to eat-pasta syndrome. I made this with mushroom, dried porcini mushroom. I also used the water I soaked the porcini in. The pasta was very tasty with the aroma of herb. I want to try other pastas the vendor has.

Bottarga Pasta

Had Sumiko's birthday dinner at CHIAROSCURO in San Francisco. We had special dish, house made pasta with house made Bottarga !! It was soooooo good. Bottarga is salt cured so had nice dry fish aroma and rich taste. When I went to Italian cooking class, this was one of the dishes I made so thought it was popular Italian food. However I have rarely seen this dish in menu at any restaurants so I was wondering. This was special request to the restaurant from Sumiko and we did enjoy it.

I had snapper course with Bottarga pasta. Everything was very tasty. Oh, that center picture is Pasta with Bottarga.

Stencil and Cassoulet

I did stencil on Tshirts using freezer paper. What a fun it was! First I outlined the plant I liked in a photograph and traced it on the freezer paper. Then cut the shape out and ironed it on the Tshirt. Colored with stencil paint, dried it and peeled off the paper and done!

I saved the cut out paper and made reversed paint (the object is not painted) on another T shirt. The one on the left is drying after I put green paint and the right is finished one. Hmmm...It is a little messy on the edges.

The cold weather came back so made a French stew dish, Cassoulet from this recipe which takes ONLY 3 hours to cook. Well, the original recipe takes 2 days so this is easier version. Basically, white bean+bread crumbs infused by sausages, bacon and duck legs. I used wild boa sausages which we bought from a French vendor from Farmer's market and turkey legs.
After 3 hours of cutting, browning, stewing and baking.....Voila! Oh my gosh, it was wonderful. The picture is not so great but the beans and bread crumbs sucked up the juices and great flavor from the meat and it was unbelievably good. The bread crumbs on the top is brown and crispy and the turkey meat just fell apart from the bone. Tres bien!!

Inauguration day

The speech was very moving and made us proud to say that man is our president. (well, I am just a green card holder so "proud to say I live in the country that man is leading.") I am sure I am not the only one who felt this country will change dramatically during his speech. It may take time though. I only sympathize when I think how much pressure he has now.

Warm weather, warm food

Chef Steven made another masterpiece, asparagus stuffed sole fish with Cheddar cheese sauce. The sauce is creamy but not heavy...tasty!!

We are having warm weather this week. It is 70 degrees in mid of January! I am in Tshirt & shorts but I found good choucroute recipe in my favorite blog so nedded to cook it. Stewed a lot of sauerkraut+onion in white wine with some spices and added sausage, bacon and potatoes.

Looks like German food but it is French food, a traditional dish of Alsace. I wanted to add more pork meat like pork trotters but Steven is not a big fan of those so I omitted it. Still smoky and hearty dish. It was great even in a hot day.

The food we had recently

Since we enjoyed the visits in France in 2005 and 2007. I sometimes make French food and here is something goes well with white wine, Brandade. I didn't have salted cod so started with making one. Bobby Flay's recipe says the cod should be sit in salt for 2 days but I did for 4 days by mistake so it was a little salty. I liked my Brandade baked so put it in the oven for 15 minutes. The cod and mashed potato were creamy and smooth!
これは白ワインに合うBrandade(塩タラとジャガイモをペーストにしたもの)。

Grilled Halibut, sauteed carrot and mushroom risotto. Yeah, we like fish. We are lucky because we can get very fresh sea food at farmer's market every Saturday.
Halibut(カレイに似た魚です)のロースト、人参のソテー、マッシュルームのリゾット。

The next day I made risotto cake with the left over risotto. I put some cheese in it so when I cut it the melted cheese came out from it. Mmmmm.

Steven cooked cod chowder. This is healthy version so didn't have any heavy milk. Great for a cold nights. Yum! Thank you, honey!

This is also Steven's work, Dried Porcini mushroom crusted halibut. Ohhhhhh, it was tasty. The dried Porcini is in the sauce too so I was able to enjoy the aroma and taste twice. The fish was done just right! My complements to the Chef Steven!!
