Happy Valentien's Day!

Steven was home for Valentine's day this year and we went to La Pastaia for the dinner. It was second time we had Valentine's dinner here. 2011's visit is here.

We took pictures each other and I photoshopped!! Don't look too close because there are so many unfinished parts.

Most of the restaurants have pre fixed dinner on Valentine's day and this place is no exception. We needed to choose our dishes from limited menu but don't they look good?

Though they were pretty good, the ones in 2011 were better. They paid more attentions to the details and had delicate taste back then. Anyway it was nice to have time together on Valentine's day before his next business trip which is tomottow. :(

Crab shopping at Halfmoon bay

Before the crab season is gone, we needed to go to Halfmoon Bay to get some!

Hey, Mr. Give us some nice ones!

Since we came all the way to the Bay, let's take some walk on the beach! The nets behind me are crab traps. Took a shot while the fisherman was not around.

Beautiful !!

Dinners we had recently

 Dinner we had recently.

Dungeness crab:The crab fishermen on Half moon Bay were on strike for a long time and we missed a crab party we had planned with our friends. Now it ended and the fishermen went back to water. I wanted to go to Half moon Bay but the weather is not so cooperating with our 1hour drive to there. I decided to go to a local store to get one. Well, it was expensive but better than none.
We had it with hamachi sashimi. Yeah, sea food fiesta! The crab meat is so sweet and very dense. Loved it! The yellow thing in the small cup is crab butter which Steven learned to eat recently. Now I need to share with him. :)

Halibut with mango salsa: Steven requested Halibut for dinner so a good wife (me) had run to Wholefoods to get the fish. I used to go to Race Street Fish Market on the way home. (It is amazing the store was on the path of my 5 minute commute!) However the store have closed! Now I need to drive to Wholefoods in Campbell. Now it takes 10 mins each way so 20 minutes+shopping time and go home instead of 5 minutes+shopping. Bummer! I even searched the fish market but no luck. I really missed the market :(

Side dish is steamed broccoli & sun dried tomatoes.

The salad was baby Romain+Blue cheese+walnut+pear+dried cranberries.
If you don't like dried fruit/vegetable. You wouldn't want to come to my dinner tonight. :)

Pot roast: This is my neighbors slow cooker. I don't own one. We wanted to eat some comfort food in a winter day so I borrowed this slow cooker from Cheryl. (Thank you, Cheryl!) I just used Trader Joe's Cabernet Beef Pot Roast which is already marinated in wine and spice. I added some vegetables, poured some water and white wine and closed with the lid and left it for 4 hours.

My Irish man insisted having this dish with mashed potato so I made that, too.
It was OK meat. I could have done better than this.

New Year's day brunch 2013

Happy New Year! Wishing you a joy filled 2013.
Living in US for 15 years, one of the things I don't want to give up is this Japanese new year brunch, Osechi.

First, toast some rice cake(mochi). They are my friend's home made mochi. Looks good, doesn't it?

This is Ozoni soup. Veggies, shrimp and toasted rice cake are set in the bowl. OK, ready to pour some soup.

Ohhhh, warm and tasty. This year, I made Western Japan style soup which is miso based. This miso is so tasty and I won't tell you where I got. It is a secret. :)

I made some appetizers.

I made them with my friends in my French Cooking class so I can't get all the credits this year's Osechi.

Sake is from my sister and brother in law. Kikuhime. Very tasty.

Wishing you a great yesr 2013.

Progressive Dinner 2012

Our New Year's Eve is always safe and peaceful with people on Norton Ave. We did this year, too.
I made puff pastries for appetizer. Mushroom one and Ham & Cheese one. It was my first try but went well. Tasted pretty good.

Rudolf was there, too. Looks like he didn't go back to North Pole with Santa.

We started at one house for appetizer and move to another house for Soup & Salad, Main dishes, Dessert and Champaign. We started at 7pm and ended at a little past at midnight so 5 houses for 5 hour. Pretty simple.

I was wearing a shinny sweater with sequins that my mother in law gave me for Christmas present.

We took pictures in front of the hosted houses.

Well, we missed pics on two other houses but it is OK.

Happy New Year !!

Cooking class for Osechi

After a nice 10 mile morning run, I went to a French cooking class to make Western Osechi for New Year's day dishes. Osechi is Japanese New Year's dishes and usually Japanese food but we sometimes make western items and pack in Ojubako (special obento box).

We cooked for 5 hours with the french chef including lunch which is OMG tasty Omelet rice. I don't have any pics for the lunch but it was ridiculously good. The chef made them for us and the eggs were soft and when we cut the surface of the omelet, it nicely fell down over the ketchup flavored rice. Chef poured a plenty of demi glace sauce he made over it and ohhhhhhhh. We were in heaven.

We made 10 kinds of food and they are nicely set in my Ojubako. Pretty!

Here is the evidence that I did attend this Osechi cooking. I am rolling stuffed chicken.

Post Christmas days

After Christmas day, we drove to Steven's father's house. We always enjoy breakfast at Country Deli near his house. This is a heavy metal toy they have on the counter. The man suuposed to hold a ring for the dog to jump in but this is antique and it has been long gone. You put a coin in the dog mouth then he jump through the ring and drop the coin in the barrel. Wish I could see it.

The place has a lot of Christmas decoration. The santas butts are all cookie jars. Cute? We had good pancake brunch and had good time with Dad.

Christmas Day

We are in Philadelphia to spend Christmas with Steven's family. Look! It is snow!! Perfect timming. We are having white Christmas. However the snow was very light and I made only tiny snowman.

We are follow the Christmas tradition. Opening presents on Christmas morning.
Steven got a cool sweater. Looks good on you, honey.

I also got a sweater but mine is shinny sequined one and I can wear it New Year's eve. The head band has a feather! We gave a bag for Mom and hat&scarf for Frank but Mom said "Oh, no pics! I am still in PJs." so no pictures.

Now time to cook a Christmas dinner. We ordred this 7lb ham from a store and it was delivered in time. Wow, huge! I will put apricot jam+garlic+whisky on the ham and roast in the oven for 40 mins.

Roasted veggies is everybody's favorite here. Mushrooms, persnips, Romanesco, sweet potato and yellow pepper. I should have bought a red one for color.

Almost ready to cook!

I also made chest nut stuffing and some appetizers. Mashed potato is mom's.

Look how big this ham is!

Everything was tasty and we had a nice Christmas dinner.
