Book sale for Japan

There will be a book sale in front of Nijiya Market in Mountain View, CA at 11a-3p on Sat April 9th. Used Japanese and English books, DVD will be on sale and the sale will be donated to Japan Earthquake relief. If you have some used books/DVDs in Japanese or English to donate, please see the detail below the map. We were in Korea and Japan for two weeks. When I was waiting for a returning plane to SF, they were practicing earthquake/fire drill. "It would be awful if a big earthquake occured in a place like this." I thought...it was only 2 days before the earthquake happend. I was depressed with the umbelievable movie clips and news but cannot keep crying, need to do something for the victims! I also updating the trip entries under this entry. 4月9日(土)にマウンテンビューのニジヤマーケットで古本市が行われます。収益は東日本震災への義援金になります。販売されるのは日本語と英語の古本やDVDなど。寄付したい本やDVDをお持ちの方下の地図のところをご覧下さい。韓国、日本の2週間の旅行から帰ってきてからすぐに起こったこの震災。成田空港で帰りの飛行機を待っている時、空港ビルの人達が地震の避難訓練をしていたの。「こんなところで大地震が起こったら大変だろうなあ。」などど、ぼんやり考えていたのが地震の2日前でした。信じられない映像やニュースにずいぶんへこんでいましたが、悲しんでばかりいられない！何か役に立つことしないとね。旅行の記録もこのエントリーの下に加えていってます。 Bring your book&DVD to donate for the sale between 10am-10:15am at the sale day, Sat. Japan Trip 4 - Beppu

We bought a new camera in Japan!! I have wanted a nicer compact camera close to SLR camera and found it! Canon Powershot S95. Look at the picture above. The blue glasses are focused but the back ground is unfocused. I wanted to get this effect. 日本で新しいカメラを買いました！一眼レフに近いコンデジが欲しかったのだけど、ついに見つけた。Canon Powershot S95.　上の写真で青の切子グラスにはきっちり焦点があっているけど、背景がボケているでしょう？こういうのが撮りたかったんだなあ。

Even my usual pea snack looks good... いつものピーおかきまでよく見える。

Sweet shrimps look GREAT!! Love the color. This camera is good for low light so I wouldn't have problem taking pictures of my dinner. :) Cannot wait to take more pictures. (Mainly food pics :) 甘エビがきれいでしょ！色がいいなあ。このカメラはローライトのところでもよく撮れるので夕食の写真なんかにもいいのです。写真撮るのが楽しみ！（主に食べ物のね。）

Japan Trip 3 - Beppu

I really like this Japanese garden at Mom's. I grow up in this garden chasing Koi fish in the pond, smelling flowers and collecting maple leaves. I love the tiny water fall above the pond. I used to scoop water in my little bucket and played with my sisters. 実家のお庭は私のお気に入り。この庭で遊んで育ったので、懐かしさもあります。池に入って鯉を追いかけたり、お花の匂いをかいだり、もみじの葉っぱを集めたり。池の上のほうにある小さな水が落ちる場所が好きで子供の頃の私は水を小さなバケツに汲んで、妹達と遊んでいました。

Mom has several kinds of Camellia trees and they are all bloomed and pretty. ママの椿コレクションも美しく、今が満開です。

I can see some other flowers blooming and they say, "Spring has come!"

他のお花もちらほら咲いて「春が来たよ。」と教えています。

Japan Trip 2-Tokyo

We always wake up very early when we are in Asia and get hungry around 7am. This place opens at 7:30am and serves great tofu breakfast. On top of that, It is only a few minutes walk from our inn. アジアに来ると時差で朝早く目がさめて、7時頃にはお腹がすいてきます。このお店は朝7時半から新鮮なお豆腐を中心とした朝食をいただけるのでうれしい！その上、旅館から徒歩2，3分なんです。 Fresh tofu, miso soup, egg dish and been curd...everything is very tasty and prepared very carefully. Great breakfast place! I bought some tofu products so that we can share these with mom and sis. おいしい新鮮なお豆腐、お味噌汁、卵焼き、厚揚げなど、全部おいしく丁寧に作られています。素晴らしい！揚げやがんもなど別府の家族と一緒にいただけるようお土産に買いました。

After 1.5 hr flight from Tokyo to Beppu and Girl's day lunch was waiting for us!!! Yummy. Thank you, Mom!!　1時間半のフライトで別府に到着。待っていたのはお雛祭りランチ。おいしいー！ママ、ありがとう！

Japan Trip 1-Tokyo

First food we had in Tokyo was Soba (buckwheat noodle). We don't have soba specialized restaurans in the area we live so we were dying to have good ones. This place was great. The dipping sauce is tasty with deep flavor. The sobagaki (soba dumpling) was fresh and great texture. 日本について一番にたべたのはお蕎麦。ウチのエリアにはお蕎麦屋さんというものがない。和食のお店においてあるけれど、お店で打って…なんてものはないので是非是非食べたいのです。ここは旅館に近くにあったところですが、とってもおいしかった。私は鴨なんそば、Stevenは天ぷらセイロ。おだしがとても深いあじで、2人で「あー、これこれ。これが食べたかったの」と言いながらいただきました。そばがきも舌触りがすばらしかった。

We stayed the Ryokan we had never stayed. It is still in our favorite area, Ya-ne-sen (Yanaka, Nezy, and Sendagi). They also have nice bath tubs you can enjoy looking at their little garden. Nice!! 今回は泊まったことのない旅館にトライしました。変わらないのは私達の好きな谷根千エリアにあるということ。ここはお風呂が二つあって旅館の小さなお庭をみながら入れるのがよかった！

Walked to Daimyo Clock Museum but it was closed :( Though their garden was pretty so sneaked into inside. 近くに大名時計博物館があるというので行ったのですが開いていなかった。お庭がきれいだったので、こっそり入って見てきました。

Ueno Park was in walking distance. We saw early bloomed Sakura!! Good to see Sakura in Japan...Pretty...Tokyo National Museum was showing a king of Japanese painting artist, Ikuo Hirayama's works. This exhibition was very impressed one. He was not only an artist but he made an big effort to protect cultural properties in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and Cambodia. He visited the sites and bought some of the artifacts which could be lost by wars and fights. Most importantly, they will be returned to the sites when the places get safe. I was so moved. This artist couldn't let the arts become ashes and spend his money and time to save them! He also drew the amazing scenaries at the sites and we enjoyed them along the artifacts he rescued.

上野公園は歩ける距離だったので、行って見ました。早咲きの桜が咲いててうれしかった！キレイ…日本で桜が見られてよかった。上野の東京国立博物館では平山郁夫の「仏教伝来の道　平山郁夫と文化財保護」が展示されていました。芸術家であるだけでなく失われつつある芸術品の保存にも力を注いでいた平山氏の生き方に感動しました。インド、パキスタン、アフガニスタン、中国、カンボジアを訪れ、内戦やその他の戦いで壊される前に、そこにある芸術品（仏像など）を買って持ち帰り、その場所が又、安全になれば返還するという芸術を本当に愛する人の心に感動。その土地で描かれた思い入れのある作品も彼が持ち帰った芸術品ともに楽しみました。

夜はDrewとミエちゃんと会ってスペアリブとタパスのお店に行きました。おいしかったよ。 We met Drew and Mie at Ribs & Tapas place. The rib was juicy and tasty!

Seoul Trip 7

We went to Tondemon to have grilled fish tonight. We enjoy watching the various food and people eating on the street stalls. Ohhhhh, marinated crabs look gooooood!! 東大門に焼き魚を食べに行きました。マーケットのおいしそうな食べ物や屋台を見ながら歩いて行きます。あー、醤油付けのカニがおいしそう！

We found grilled fish street! There were a lot of grilled fish restaurants on both sides of the street. They grill fish outside so you can see what kind fish you can eat. 焼き魚横丁を見つけました！道の両側にレストランが並び、お店の外でお魚を焼いているのでどんな魚が食べられるのかわかる。

Everything looked great and the ones we ate were so tasty. This place must be good because camera crew filming food & people there. Korean food usually comes with 4 or 5 small dishes of appetizer such as pickles, Kimchi....and we love those. Miso soup came with it at this restaurant. 全部おいしそうだったけど、私達のいただいたお魚もとんでもなくおいしかった!カメラクルーも入っていたし、評判のおいしいお店に違いない！韓国料理についてくる小皿の漬物やキムチが楽しい。ここではお味噌汁もついてきました。

On the way back, I met a beautiful Korean girl in a traditional dress. :) 帰り道で伝統服を着た韓国美女と会いました。

OK. Enough playing around. Will leave for Japan tomorrow. はい、おふざけはこのくらいで。明日は日本へ発ちます。

Seoul Trip 6

Seoul in February is cold. We some snow and frozen trees in the mountains. No way we can see Sakura at the Yeouido this time. 2月のソウルはすごく寒い。山際には雪や凍りつく木々が見えました。今回はヨイドで桜を見るのは無理だなあ。

We went to dinner with Seoul office people and he is showing Koean way to open beer bottle with spoon. Can you see the bottle cap flying on Step 2 pic? It was so funny to see this and we aplaused and laughed very hard. ソウルオフィスの人たちと夕食。この彼は韓国流ビールの開け方を見せてくれています。何とスプーンで開けるんです。彼の左肩に飛んでいるフタに注目。すごくおかしくって大笑いと大喝采でした。

The meat there was very good. Looks like they are using special charcoal. At the end of meal, we ordred noodles. I ordered cold noodle with soup of course and I was told this mild noodle was for senior people and young people usually order spicy noodle which Steven ordred. Whatever!! お肉はもちろんとてもおいしかった。ここは何だか特別な炭を使っているようです。食事の〆には麺類を頼んだのですが、私はもちろん冷麺。でもこの辛くない冷麺は普通、年配の人々が多く注文するようで、若者はStevenが注文した辛い麺を食べるとか。そんなの気にしないよーだ。

I needed to take a pic with Beard Papa since I LOVE their cream puffs. He was still looking at me when I was leaving. He was saying, "Just picture? You need to buy some!" 私の好きなビアードパパがいたので、写真撮影。帰ろうとする私をいつまでも見てた。「写真だけとって帰るのか？シュークリーム買っていけぇ！」なんて言っていたのか。

Seoul Trip 5 breakfast

We had a few times to eat breakfast together in Seoul and we had... ソウルでは数回Stevenと一緒に朝食をしました。

Korean Porridge :I didn't have this when we visited Korea last time so I was looking for this. Dry abalone porridge...YUM!! We both look sleepy though... 韓国粥 :前のソウル旅行で食べ損ねた待望のお粥。あわびのお粥がおいしかった。それにしても2人とも眠そうな顔してるなあ。

Korean noodle :It was very cold morning when we had this but I had cold noodle (there was some ice in the soup!) because I love this sour soup. Steven had warm noodle and it came in a pot! 韓国ヌードル :とても寒い朝でしたが、氷の入った韓国冷麺を食べた。だってあの酸っぱいスープがすき何だもの。Stevenはうどん風のヌードルを注文したら、お鍋ごとやってきた！

Sweets :The other day we went to a cafe and had nice cafe latte and sweet breakfast. Mine was Chiffon cake with whip cream and Steven had a Belgian waffle with whip cream. Loved the airy cake! 甘いもの :その他の日にはカフェでおいしいカフェラテと甘いもので朝食。私のは紅茶のシフォンケーキとホイップクリームでStevenはベルジアンワッフルを食べました。フワフワの食感がナイス！

Seoul Trip 4

I took a subway to Dongdaemun Market where is a few station away from the hotel. This market is bigger than Nandemaon I went yesterday and has more daily stuff. 地下鉄に乗って東大門市場へ。ホテルからは３～４駅の近い場所。昨日行った南大門より大きいかな。日常品、食品が多いような気がする。

I really liked the egg dish I had with Mom and my sis, Ryoko 3 years ago so wanted to have it again. Though I don't remember which restaurant. I thought they all make the same pretty much because it looks like basic dish. WRONG! The one I had here was not so good. The texture of the egg was too hard like over cooked. Oh well... 3年前にソウルに来た時、ママと妹の涼子と食べた茶碗蒸しのような卵料理がとてもおいしかったので、又、食べたかったのだけどそのお店を覚えてない。韓国ではきっと基本の料理だろうから、どこでもおいしいかな、と思い、あるお店でトライ。うーん、そうではなかった。ここのは卵が固すぎておいしくなかった。焼きすぎって感じ。残念でした。

When I see this from outside, I thought it was Japanese sweets, Taiyaki. They are usually fish shape and have sweet bean paste inside. I don't like those kind sweets but I saw different kind stuffing. I picked Purukogi (Korean :stir fried marinated meat) and found out this was a kind of sandwich! They use white sandwich bread instead of flour dough. They put a piece of bread on the iron molding, add cooked purukogi meat, put another piece of bread on it and squished with another iron molding and cooked for a few minutes. I liked it! Much better than Japanese Taiyaki. このかわいいお店を外から見たとき、たい焼きのお店だと思い、あんこが苦手な私は通り過ぎようとしたのですが、あら、中身を選べるみたい。何とプルコギがあるじゃないか。さすが韓国。それ、いただきましょう。よく見るとたい焼きの皮の部分をサンドイッチのパンで作っている。パンの間にプルコギを置いてぎゅーっと形をつけて数分焼くと鯛の形のパニーニサンドイッチ。おいしかった。私はたい焼きよりこちらの方が好きです。

Seoul Trip 3

Had lunch with Steven and his coworker. We went to hot pot noodle place. There was a big hot pot in the middle of our table and the waitress adeptly put noodle, veggies and super thin beef in the broth. She even devided it in our bowl. We loved this noddle! Finally something not spicy and tasty food in Korea! Stevenの会社の人とランチ。お鍋に麺と薄い牛肉が入ったもの。テーブルの中央に大きなお鍋があり、ウェイトレスさんが、火をつけるところからどんぶりによそうまで、全てやってくれました。おいしかったあ。全く辛くなくやさしい味のお汁でした。韓国にも辛くないお料理があるのねえ。

I went to Namdaemun Market this afternoon. There were a lot of daily food, spices, nuts and tea there. I bought pine nuts for Mom who uses them in her Kimchi. 午後は南大門へ歩いて行き、マーケットを見てきました。日常品の食料から、スパイス、ナッツ類、お茶などたくさん。ママにキムチ用の松の実を買いました。

Steven's coworker recommended this dumpling restaurant, Crystal Jade. This was not a Korean food but needed a little break from Kimchi.　Stevenの会社の人が薦めた餃子のお店、Crystal Jade。韓国料理じゃないけれどキムチからちょっと離れてみるのもいいでしょ。皮がよくできてたなあ。

Seoul Trip 2

Since we are in Korea, we had to have Korean BBQ!! We went to the one in Myongdong with Steven's coworkers. Look at the vent tube right on the pot. It sucks all the smoke so your hair and clothes don't get BBQ smell....not quite so but it sucked most of the smoke and smell. The food there was very good. I liked the seafood pancake, Chijimi.
韓国にいるんだから、焼肉食べなくちゃね。ミョンドンのレストランへStevenと会社の人達とで行きました。鉄板の真上にのびる排気口が煙を100％吸い込むので、髪の毛や服に匂いがつきません…というわけにはいかないけれど、それでもずいぶん煙を吸っていました。海鮮チジミがおいしかった。

I had hair cut in Seoul!! The curl of course disappeared next day but I still like the cut. He did a good job!　初めてソウルで髪を切ってもらいました！直後は巻いてもらったので、フワフワしてますが、次の日にはもちろんストレートは逆戻り。でもカットはよかった。

Seoul Trip 1

I went to a local restaurant in Myeongdong. I had never had bibimbap with fish roe but I loved the crispy texture and the lightness. I stopped at Holly's Coffee and had Yuzu freeze. Goooood!!
ミャンドンのジモッティが行きそうなレストランへ行き、トビコ入りのビビンバを食べました。プチプチ感がおいしい軽い感じがよかった。その後、Holly's Coffeeでコーヒーでなく柚子のスムージーにトライ。おいしい！

We stayed at The plaza we stayed before but we were surprised by their renewed interior. They were nice classic hotel but now they are pop and funny. There are big mirrors on the both sides of the wall and HUGE desk lamps on two corners.
前回と同じThe Plazaに泊まったのですが、リモデルされた内装に驚きました。前は落ち着いたホテルだったのに、何だかポップで変わった感じ。両方の壁に大きな鏡があったり、巨大卓上ライトの形をしたフロアランプが部屋の２つのコーナーにあるんです。

So I can play with infinity images with the funny mirror.
その２つの鏡を使って無限イメージを作ってみたり、

Candlestick Park Antique Market

I dragged Steven to Candlestick Antique Market. I also dragged our friends, Hisami & Michael to there :) The weather was nice. Much nicer than I thought. We enjoyed antique shopping. I got some antique and not-so-antique to decorate our house. Mostly for our new kitchen!! (which will be renewed soon) My biggest moment was when I found the Christmas plate of 1971. The rabbit caught my eyes from far. I felt like the bunny jumped out from the plate and came to me saying "Hey, I am here!".
StevenをひきずってCandlestick Parkのアンティークマーケットに行ってきました。実はひきずったのは彼だけでなく、お友達の久美さん＆Michaelも。お天気は思っていたよりかなりよく、暖かくて見て回るには丁度いい感じでした。古いものやあまり古くないものを色々買って来ました。ほとんどが、新しいキッチンに飾るもの。（正確には「リモデルをもうすぐ始めるキッチン」） 一番の収穫は1971年のクリスマスプレート。お皿のウサギが遠くから目に入ってきたのです。お皿からピョンと飛び出して、「ちょっと、こっち、こっち。」と呼びに来たような感じでした。

After the shopping, we went to Himawari Ramen in San Mateo. Ohhhhh, it was great. I think their ramen was the best in Bay Area. This place is very popular and we needed to wait more than 30 mins to get in so we bought tiny taiyaki (sweets, cream inside) from Sweet bream which is on the same street.
ショッピングの後はSan MateoのHimawariというラーメン屋さんへ行きました。あー、おいしかった。ベイエリアではここが一番おいしいと思う。とても人気があるので、30分くらい待ってお店に入りました。その間、同じ通りにあるSweet Breamsでミニミニたい焼き、クリーム入りを食べながら待ちました。

Talking about sweets, I baked Vanilla Souffle with chocolate chunk. Looks good, doesn't it? Well, taste was just OK.
甘いものといえば、この間チョコレート入りバニラスフレを作りました。おいしそうでしょ、でも味はまあまあ。

Our star Magnolia is blooming. Too bad we are leaving for Korea/Japan tomorrow.
マグノリアが最初の花を咲かせました！明日から韓国/日本の旅へ出かけるので残念。
