Tile time!! They started with stapling the wire mesh to the wall, put some mortar on for tiles.
タイルの係りの人達が来ました。まずは金網を壁に大きいホッチキスで留めていき,その上にモルタルを乗せます。

Mortar is done. Hmmmm, I like this color. I might paint the wall gray!!
モルタル終了。あら？この色いいじゃないの。壁をグレイにしちゃおうかな。

The decorative tiles are also installed and still have spacers between the tiles. White grout will be insert between them.
デコタイルも期待通りに出来上がりました。まだ、スペーサーがタイルの間に入ってますが。これから白いグラウトが隙間に埋め込まれます。

Beautiful, JUST Beautiful!!! We did a good job picking these decorative tiles.
素晴らしい、ただ、ただ素晴らしい。このデコタイルよかったよ、本当に。

Now our kitchen is 85% done. Need to think about crown molding. We will do this by ourselves.
さあ、キッチンも85％できあがり。次は私達がクラウンモルディングを付け替える番です。古いのを、バリッとひきはがして、新しいのをつけます。白いのをつける予定。

Also need to pick color for the wall...It is going to be another busy weekend! :)
その前には壁も塗り替えないとね。何色がいいかなあ。今週末も忙しくなりそうです。

Kitchen Remodeling 5

The gas pipe is in, electricity is set and the granite is cut!!! Yes, today is the day the granite counter is in! The new plywood is nailed in first and here it comes. Granite counter! It looks good and go well with our floor.
ガス工事終了、電気工事終了、カウンターになるグラナイトのカットも終了したと電話がありました！そう、今日はそのグラナイトが来る日です。新しいベースの板をしいて、グラナイトが来たー！いい感じです。床の黒と合う。



The new sink is also installed and we have two halls for a faucet and soap dispenser. Steven looks happy, too.
新しい流しもつきました。２つの穴は蛇口と洗剤入れをつけるためのもの。Stevenもうれしそう。

Tile guys are coming on Monday! After the tiles are installed on the wall, there are some more jobs we need to do by ourselves such as crown molding and painting. Almost there!!!
月曜日にはタイルを貼る人がきます。タイルの後は私達が自分でする仕事、クラウンモルディング、ペンキ塗りなどが続きます。完成の日も近い！

Drinko de Mayo!

My lovely neighbor, Cheryl hosted girl's Drinko de Mayo party at her place so I made guacamole and fruit salad in a water melon cup. I looked for a proper attire for this Mexican theme party and this is it. Cute beach skirt from Brazil. Well, same South America, right?
ご近所さんのCheryl がメキシコの大きな祝日、Cinco de Mayo（５月５日）にDrinko de Mayoと名づけてガールズパーティーを開いてくれました。（Cinco de Mayoの詳細はこちら）私はキュウリとクミンシードがたっぷり入ったグアカモレとスイカをくりぬいてフルーツサラダを作って行きました。メキシカンな衣装を探したけれど手持ちの衣装の中ではこのかわいいビーチスカート。ブラジルで買ったものですが同じ南アメリカってことでOKでしょ。

Cheryl has a gorgeous garden and we had so much fun there. Seven women got together and drunk, chatted, laughed so hard...." We should do this every week!!" That is our conclusion at the end of the party. :) Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Cherylのお庭はとても素敵。そのお庭で楽しい時間をすごしました。女性だけ７人集まって飲んで、しゃべって、大笑いして。パーティーの終わりに皆が同意したのは「これ毎週しようよ！」と言う意見。ははは。Happy Cinco de Mayo!!

Run for Japan 2

It was a beautiful Sunday morning and a lot of people got together for Japan earthquake relief.
気持ちのいい日曜の朝。たくさんの人が東北地震被災者への救済のため集まりました。

Before the run/walk, there was a opening ceremony and we did "Radio Taiso"!!! It is a traditional Japanese exercises we have been doing since 1925. Some factories and companies in Japan do this exercises every morning. All the Japanese kids learn this at the elementary school and they keep doing till high school!! During the summer vacation, kids go to their local park to do this exercises at 6:30am EVERYDAY. They have a little card hanging around their necks and get a stamp after the exercises. If you don't miss any days, you will get a little prize. So Japanese people have a lot of memories and sentimental feelings about this exercises. When I heard, "We are doing Radio Taiso before the run." I just laughed and cannot stop laughing and smiling because I never thought I would do have a chance to do this in US. I did this first time in 25 years probably. Now you understand why I am laughing in all the pictures above.
Run/Walkが始まる前にオープニングイベントがあったのですが、何とラジオ体操をみんなでしました! 夏休みに毎日首からカード下げて近くに公園に朝６時半に行っていた子供の頃を思い出しました。２５年ぶりかなあ。何だかいろいろなことを思い出したり、アメリカで日本人以外の人達とこの体操をしていることの意外性がおかしくてずっと笑いながら体操してしまいました。だから上の写真では全部大笑いしているの。

It was a great event and I was amazed that this event organized very well in a very short time. We ran/walked praying Japan will recover and get back their power soon. The lady on the left is Yuko san, one of the organizers of this event. Aya san finished running her first race! Great job, everybody!!
とてもいいイベントでした。感心したのはこの短い間にとてもよくオーガナイズされていたこと。みんな日本が復興して早く元気を取り戻せるように祈りながら参加しました。左の写真の女性はオーガナイザーの一人である、ゆう子さん。文さんも初レースを完走！みんなよくがんばった！

Sharks & Run for Japan

San Jose Sharks beat LA Kings and are going to the next stage of Playoffs for Stanley cup!! I drew this on our front window. We are also rooting for the Philadelphia Flyers so I didn't forget their name.

地元ホッケーチームのサンノゼシャークスがLAのキングスを破り、次のステージへ。スタンリーカップという国内一を決める試合への予選であるプレイオフでがんばっています。ウチの正面の窓にこんなものを書いて応援しています。フィラデルフィアのチームフライヤーズも応援しているので忘れずにちょこっと。

I volunteered for making signs for Run For Japan event. I got a cool Staff T-shirt! I made some friends here and had fun making these signs.
Run For Japanのイベントで看板書きのボランティアをしてきました。かっこいいスタッフTシャツまでもらっちゃった。お友達もできて楽しくサインを作ってきました。

これが私達のグディーバッグとゼッケン。今回はStevenとウォークに参加ですが、次回は走ります。ね、Steven？あ、どっか行っちゃった。

Oh my gosh, my kitchen!!!

キャー！ウチのキッチンが！

Yes, they came to demolish the kitchen counter and wall tiles. These two guys did very fast and carefully without using any power tools and cleaned after very well.
そうです。この２人がキッチンカウンターと壁のタイルを壊しに来ました。パワーツールは使わず丁寧にしかもすごく早く壊しました。そして後もすごくキレイに掃除していってくれた。

Then, granite guy came in and made a template for the counter with very thin wooden plate. He took it back to cut granite!!
次にgraniteの係りの人が来て、石を切るための型を作っていきます。薄い木の板で作り、それを持って帰りました。

We are excited to see the diner looking black & white tiles are gone! We cannot cook for a week or so. So no cooking pictures for a while.
ダイナー風の白黒タイルがなくなってうれしい！１週間ほどはキッチン使えないので、お料理の写真はしばらくありません。悪しからず！

Kitchen remodeling 3 & Easter

Nice legs, Steven! This is him climbing into the attic to install a vent pipe for kitchen hood. YES, we are installing a hood! いい足してるねえ、お兄さん！Stevenが屋根裏に上って換気扇の排気パイプをつけているところです。そう、今日は新しい換気扇がつきます！

He made a big hall on the cabinet ceiling and the pipe goes into this to connect to the hood. Noise and mess!!　Stevenがキャビネットの天井にでっかい穴をあけています。ここにパイプを通して換気扇とつなげます。ひゃー、騒音とほこりがすごーい。

And here it is!! The kitchen hood is installed successfully! My husband can do anything!! I helped making a template for the holes and holding the hood while he was screwing it. I love this hood! The fan is not so noisy and has a good lighting.
そして、換気扇のインストール完了！ウチの主人は何でもしてしまいますのヨ。私が手伝ったのは穴位置を確認するテンプレート作りと換気扇をつける時に支えていたことだけ。この換気扇気に入りました。そんなにうるさくないし、ライトが明るいのでガスレンジの上のお料理がよく見える！

Before all that, we had a Easter breakfast. Well, It doesn't look special and I didn't do good job on a smoke chicken frittata but the plates and berries have a very spring feelings so here, I will call this an Easter breakfast!
そんなこんなの前にはイースターの朝食をいただきました。いえ、別に特別なものではないし、スモークチキンのフリタッタが焦げちゃったけど、お皿とベリー類が春っぽいでしょ、だからイースターの朝ごはんということにします。

Kitchen remodeling 2

Gas range has arrived finally. We have not hooked gas or electric yet but damn, it looks good !!
It is a kind that Professional chef would use :) I have to cook like a pro chef with this :) :)
ガスレンジが届きました。まだガスも電気もつないでないので、使えませんが、うーん、ハンサムだこと。プロのシェフが使うようなレンジなので、プロ並みにお料理しなくては。

After several months of searching and visiting, we decided to go with United Marble & Granite Inc for our kitchen counter and back splash. Today, we went there and signed the contract! Exciting!!! They will come next Wednesday to demolish our old counter and back splash tiles. Bye bye, 60's dinner look tiles!!
何ヶ月もサーチしたり、お店に通ったりしてやっとベンダーをUnited Marble &Graniteという会社に決めました。今日は契約書にサインをして、取り付けの日時を決定！来週の水曜日に古いカウンタートップと水周りの壁を壊します。バイバーイ、60年代ダイナー風のタイル！

Here are the samples of the granite stone. I thought "Absolute Black" (bottom one) was good to make our kitchen classic but after looking at other mixed texture stones, we changed our mind. "Uba Tuba" (top one) which is dark enough to keep classic kitchen feeling and has some dark green which complements the green tiles in our unique back splash!! What is unique back splash? Read on...これはカウンターにするグラナイトのサンプル。手前の「Absolute Black」というのがクラッシックなキッチンに合うと思っていたけれど、いろいろな模様の石を見ていると、ちょっと色が混ざっていた方がいいなあという気になり、一番上の「Uba Tuba」というブラジルの石に決定。これだとクラッシックな感じの暗さと、深い緑色の模様がこれからつける「ユニーク」なバックスプラッシュの緑色と合うのです。どうして「ユニーク」かって？下の写真へ。

These are the tiles I picked up at Fireclay Tile for our back splash. I love them because they remind me of Provencal area where we went for our honeymoon :) We are going to use 16 of these big tiles and frame it with small tiles. I still cannot decide dark green tiles on the left OR blue tiles on the right.
このタイルはFireclay Tileというタイルを生産/販売しているところから買ってきたもの。色合いと模様がフランスのプロバンス地方を思わせる。新婚旅行で行ったところなので印象的なのです。この模様のタイルを16個で正方形を作り、周りを小さいタイルで囲みます。左側の深い緑か右側の青かまだ決められないでいます。

The right pucture is our kitchen right now and after we install a hood, back splash and granite counter top, it will be like the left picture. Ohhhhhh, I cannot wait!!
右の写真が現在のキッチンで、換気扇のフッド、バックスプラッシュそしてグラナイトのカウンタートップを入れたら、左の写真のようになるはず。うーん、待ちきれない！

Kitchen remodeling 1

Our kitchen remodeling has been started! First, we removed microwave, gas range and dishwasher. We spent a long time to pick appliances but now they are ordered and on the way home. A kitchen hood will be placed in the space the old microwave was.
キッチンリモデルがスタート！まず、古い電子レンジ、ガスレンジ、皿洗い機を取り除きました。新しい家電を決めるのにずいぶん時間がかかりましたが、それも注文済みでもうすぐ我が家に届きます。電子レジンがあったところには換気扇のフッドを取り付ける予定。

OH!!! The fridge has arrived!! It is the same size as the old one but it looks bigger some how. Is it because of the color?
あ、さっそく冷蔵庫が届いたよ！前より大きく見えるけど同じサイズのはず。ステンレスだから大きく見えるのかなあ。

sweets and sashimi dinner

We got cupcakes from Sumiko and it was so delicious! She made chocolate cupcake with chocolate butter frosting. The cake part was very moist and I loved the richness of the frosting. Thank you, Sumiko san!
すみ子さんからホームメードのカップケーキをいただきました。ひゃーおいしかった。チョコレートのカップケーキにチョコレート味のフロスティング。ケーキの部分がなんともしっとりしていて、フロスティングの硬さもバツグン。すみ子さん、ありがとう！

Not like I was competing with her or anything but I made this sweets, too. New Orleans Bread Pudding with bourbon sauce. I like this recipe because it is not so fatty but still taste great. The sauce is rich and sweet but you can control the amount you pour on the bread pudding.
すみ子さんに対抗したわけではないけれど、私もスウィーツを作ってました。ニューオーリンズブレッドプディングのバーボンソースかけ。このレシピはソース以外にはバターを使ってないし、ヘルシーだけどおいしい。ソースは甘くて濃いけれど、かける時に調整できるから問題なしです。

Had sashimi dinner. Maguro-natto, sea urchin, taira gai and hotate on the long plate. Marinated maguro in the small ball in front.
おさしみの夕食はマグロ納豆、うに、たいら貝そしてホタテが長いお皿に。手前の鉢のはまぐろのヅケです。

Snow in California

I thought it was cold when I was running this morning. When I saw something white on the lawn in my running course, I thought "somebody dumped ice from his cooler or something." But I saw something white on the roof, too!!! What? Snow? Where am I, Philadelphia ? (I really enjoyed the snow at Dad's house in Philly) When I got home, I looked for snow at our house but it is mostly gone so couldn't take pics :( Wow, it was the first time to see snow in my 14 years of Bay Area life.
朝走っている時に何だか寒いなあと思っていたの。ランニングコースにある家の芝生に何だか白いものが落ちてて、氷みたいだなあと。「クーラーの氷を芝生の上に捨てたのか。」何て思っていて顔を上げると、屋根の上にも白いものが！そして次の家も！へ？雪？ここはどこ？フィラデルフィアか？（この間のお義父さんのところでの雪あそびがあまりに楽しかったので。）自宅に着いた時、雪を探したけどもう、ほとんど溶けていたので我が家の写真はなし。それにしてもカリフォルニアで雪なんて14年のベイエリア生活で初めてです。

Despite of the unusual cold, our "fruit basket" tree has a lot of flowers! I was skeptical about this grafted tree which has yellow, white peaches and a plum. I have to say the label was right! Cannot wait to have those fruits...
その寒さにもかかわらず、家の「フルーツバスケット」の木は花をたくさんつけています。去年これを植えた時は3種類のフルーツがひとつの木になるなんて…と相当疑っていましたが、今や信じざるを得ない。白桃、黄桃、プラムと花が違うんだもの。楽しみだなあ。

Flowers from farmer's market are pretty inside the house.

Run for Japan

This is an Run/Walk for a charity event for Japan on May 1st in Mountain View.

There will be both a 8km Fun Run and a 3.5km Fun Walk. First time runners and families with children are welcome. If you can't attend the race, feel free to still donate to the cause - we will run for Japan on your behalf!!!

I found this event yesterday when we were at Book sale for Japan at Mounttain View yesterady. Glad to find one more thing I can do for Japan!!
